Sound the Alarm: The Different Types of Relationship Flags
Relationship flags are alarms you don’t want to ignore.
Who says modern dating is easy?
If it were, I wouldn’t be here writing about how to navigate relationships, and one date would have been all we needed to find what we’re looking for. But it’s not at all like that. Problems are plentiful, and if you are faint of heart, your relationship will likely not succeed.
Fortunately, relationship flags help us keep problems within our control. Learning about the different color flags allows us to recognize issues before they can turn into something serious. But did you know that there are other flags aside from the usual red and green?
The Different Flags
Let’s go through each one and identify their differences.
Red Flags
Let’s start this list with the most popular flag known by daters everywhere: red flags.
Going by its color, you may already know what this type entails: danger. These are the kinds that daters shouldn’t think twice about because of their problematic nature. The moment you encounter one, steer clear and never look back. Ignoring them will only give you trouble.
Red flags are usually alarming issues. Common examples include constant violations of boundaries, frequent manipulation, and forced isolation from others.
Orange Flags
Orange flags are subtle warning signs in a relationship that may indicate potential issues. Unlike red flags that are more evident and severe, orange flags are easy to overlook.
These flags usually involve power and control dynamics, as one partner asserts control over aspects of the relationship. While not as serious and severe as red flags (yet), these warning signs demand immediate attention to avoid a potential breakup.
Beige Flags
This color flag refers to the odd quirks and traits that aren’t inherently good or bad. Beige flags are usually benign and not necessarily deal breakers. However, it is essential to recognize these signs as they highlight strange behaviors that may (or may not) affect your daily life.
One example of a beige flag is eccentric fashion. It may give you the ick, but it’s something you can adjust to. Successful navigation of beige flags involves embracing each other’s quirks and odd traits.
Yellow Flags
Much like orange flags, yellow flags in relationships are subtle signs that are quite easy to overlook. They also indicate that there are significant issues that require immediate attention. The only difference between orange and yellow is their severity, as orange flags are more serious.
Though yellow flags indicate potential issues, they are not necessarily bad. Communication and empathy is a good place to start in dealing with this color flags.
Pink Flags
Signs that are usually rationalized until they escalate into more serious issues are referred to as pink flags. They are not immediate deal breakers, but they nonetheless warrant attention and communication.
Examples of pink flags include: communication issues, friendship with exes, abusive tendencies, and differences in beliefs. Open communication is crucial in addressing pink flags.
Relationship flags may seem petty for some, but there’s a reason people label them as such. Their warnings are worth heeding, regardless of color. Don’t allow them to plague your partnerships. Learn to navigate the different color flags to prevent potential problems and breakups in the future.
